Ursa Had to Feed the Horses
Two giant horses as black as the holes in a skull. But the barn was empty. Ursa shook like a cold dog and walked behind the barn. The horses were there, frolicking. Also, they had shrunk. They nuzzled Ursa’s calves. So he opened the feedbag and pulled out a dead puppy. He began tearing the dead puppy in half, grunting with the effort. When he finished, he held the two pulpy halves of an apple, dripping juice. The horses smiled and waited. Ursa thrust out the food, but oh no! Too fast! The apple became a puppy again, squirming to be petted. The puppy licked Ursa’s finger and thumb, the horses each took a leg in their teeth, and Ursa pinched the puppy’s throat, offering living food, crying for puppies, just doing his job.
