Ursa Kept a Garden Bed
_____
It looked more like an old plowed field. He walked up and down the rows, never planting. He staked string along the rows, like long markers for grave mounds, to show where corn might grow. String marked the perimeter, too, boxing the garden in. Ursa bent over a row and plucked the taut string. It hummed. He walked, and a white cat walked with him. When he came to the end, he saw a black cat coming towards the garden. “Too many cats,” Ursa said. He lifted the perimeter with his foot. The two cats bumped noses. They got tangled up. Ursa heard a low moaning growl. He looked down the row and saw an endless line of gray cats walking with their left legs on one side of the string and their right legs on the other. The string rubbed their gray bellies and they moaned. They kept coming, filling the garden. Ursa Kept a Garden Bed
