Ursa Met the Silver Wolf
It had been hitching a ride in the back of a pickup truck. The truck screeched to a stop, and the wolf leaped out. A boy and a girl stepped out of the cab. Teenagers. They were tall and gangly. Their limbs were wrapped with Ace bandages. They carried laundry. The wolf ignored them. He bounded around Ursa and nipped at his pants. Ursa held very very still. Except for the flinching. The wolf crouched as if to pounce. The boy wrinkled his nose. “Man, they sure shit a lot,” he said. Oil dripped from his truck. The girl said, “Yeah,” without even looking. She scratched the dirt at the edge of her bandage. The wolf grabbed Ursa’s hand and pulled him away, down the street, to the very edge of town. Ursa Met the Silver Wolf
