Ursa Sang a Funeral Song
Or tried. He didn’t know the words. When he opened his mouth, nothing came out. Crows laughed at him. “That’s okay,” Ursa thought. He kept his mouth open anyway. He heard footsteps, his own footsteps. They stopped. He heard the slow whoosh of his blood. Hush, aah, hush. He heard the voice of the ocean saying, “I am here.” “Dream the dream, live the life, be in the body," said the voice of the ocean. She kissed Ursa’s eyes and swam away, leaving a trail of salt water dripping into his open mouth. A song flew out, so raw it had to be human. The crows cried too, flying over the bodies.
